Design, Manufacture and Collaborate

Defy adopts a client-driven and collaborative approach to product design involving conceptualization, prototyping, usability testing, feasibility / cost analysis, Design for Manufacture (DFM) and product implementation strategy. 

 

 

There are 3 ways to make a product with us

 

INJECTION MOULDING

Injection moulding is ideal for smaller consumer goods with high detail. It involves a high setup cost to manufacture the custom tooling for the part, typically moulds start at $5000 - $10,000. However this translates to a very affordable unit price due to the fast cycle time of injection moulding. Minimum order quantities start at 500 pieces.

SHEET MATERIAL & CNC ROUTING

Defy can also produce 1.2 x 2.4m sheet material from 100% recycled plastic. This is available in a number of thicknesses, custom colours and UV stabilization if necessary. With our CNC partners, we are then able to machine these sheets into a huge variety of shapes, predominantly 2D. This is an ideal manufacturing method for large form products such as signage, benchtops, seating, and many more. 

COMPRESSION MOULDING

Similar to injection moulding, compression moulding requires a custom tool to be fabricated which incurs some setup cost. Compression moulding achieves a uniquely speckled "terrazzo" effect, and can allow for much larger / thicker wall sections than injection. The drawback is that it is a much slower and labour intensive process which means the unit cost is significantly higher than injection moulding.
